I’m sure you were all as astounded as we were on Tuesday when the Facebook owned company Instagram rolled out their new feature ‘Instagram Stories.’ It’s been no secret that Snapchat and Facebook have been stepping on each others toes in the app world. With Facebook offering to buy Snapchat for 3 billion, being rejected and then taking two attempts at recreating the temporary photo service (Poke and Slingshot) and ultimately failing.

So now it seems Facebook has had a lightbulb moment, why try and recreate a similar app? Why not add the feature onto our other app that has over 500 million downloads… Instagram!? Sure enough, the online world has been up in arms over the new feature, it’s basically a carbon copy of Snapchat’s design, not only does it have the same name (‘Stories’) your story is shown to your followers for a 24 hour period, you can draw on your images to edit them and you can choose to make it public or private. Sound familiar?

However, the CEO of Instagram, Kevin Systrom, has made no denial that Snapchat deserve all the credit and that they were the inspiration for the feature. He claims that it’s not about who invented it, it’s how you change it for your own network. There was also a slight comment that Instagram were the ones who brought filters to the foreground of the app world, we wonder what Snapchat will have to say about that! Either way, we’re all downloading the update to our phones right now, as is the rest of the world, well played Facebook!
