Since the launch of ‘Stories’, Instagram and Snapchat have been at constant loggerheads, could this be the final nail in the coffin for Snapchat’s declining user base?

What’s the Difference Between Instagram Stories and Snapchat?

Good question! When Instagram stories was first released last year, everybody was quick to call them out for ‘Copying Snapchat’ which you could argue to some extent is true. There are a lot of similarities between the two platforms, both allow you to post images or short videos, get creative with stickers, filters and visual effects. They both also allow you to draw directly onto the post and disappear within 24 hours. However, Instagram Stories also allows you to tag in friends, locations and add links to posts, which is why It’s become so popular with both personal and business accounts alike. So much so that there are now 250 million Instagram stories every day, which has overtaken Snapchat, who have on average 166 million snaps per day.

What the Hell is a GIF?

GIFs, or ‘Graphical Interchange Format’ are nothing new, in fact they were invented in 1987 by a US software writer. GIF’s are highly compressed images that are really small in file size, which is why back in the days of dial up, they were so popular as they didn’t require much bandwidth. Essentially, they are a short moving image, typically under 5 seconds that loop and tend to be low in quality. Despite their low-quality, GIFs have continued to be popular across the internet and are now-a-days mostly used in memes.
